Have you ever wondered why God created us? After He created the stars, the sky, the plants, the animals He then created mankind, why? Some people believe it is because God needed our love and companionship, others believe that God needed our worship. Yes, God loves us and yes, when we worship Him it is pleasing to Him, but He doesn’t need it.
Last week as I was reading through Jen Wilkin’s book None Like Him, one chapter in particular stood out to me. It was the chapter about God being self-sufficient, meaning He needs nothing. As I reflected on her thoughts one question took up residence in my mind.
I decided to ask God, “Why did you create us, you didn’t need us, so why did you do it?” As I listened, I heard Him say, “For my pleasure.” I confess I was a little confused.
In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will… Ephesians 1:5 NIV
While we were talking I was watching my two kids play in the living room floor. God asked me, “Why did you want kids?”
As I though about His question (all the while knowing my pregnancies were no surprise) I realized my husband and I were not trying to fill a void for children, and it was not because we were needed a tax break. We wanted kids for the pleasure of enjoying God’s creation. God put the desire to be fruitful and multiply within us so that we could join Him in His pleasure.
From the moment I laid eyes on my kids, I delighted in them. Did my kids earn the pleasure I have for them? No -it just existed.
This may be hard for some of you to believe, but you don’t earn God’s pleasure. You are God’s pleasure just because you are. If we could earn God’s pleasure, then His pleasure would just be our wages. You are God’s child, not an employee.
When you do something for God let it come from the fruits of intimacy with Him and an attitude of gratitude, not out of a motive to earn something.
No, God does not need you and I, but He wants to enjoy us through the relationship He has purposed for us. So I have to ask, do you realize that He enjoys you? Are you trying to earn something you already have-His pleasure?
