Recently I had the wonderful privilege to review Jen Wilkin’s new book None Like Him: 10 Ways God is Different From Us provided by Fly By Promotions in exchange for my honest review.
Jen Wilkin is a writer, speaker and teacher of women’s bible studies. She is the also the author of Women of the Word: How to Study the Bible with Both Our Hearts and Our Minds. She is also the women’s bible study teacher for The Village Church in Flower Mound, Texas.
I have to confess at first when I even read the title of Jen’s book I thought, “Well duh, I know I’m not like God!” But then I read the book… I had no idea how much I do try to strive to have the attributes that only God has.
We read in scripture that God is self-sufficient and you and I are not, yet my actions too often reflect that of a person trying to do things all on their own. Help us Jesus!
Another example is that God is unchanging, yet when I believe that my sin or circumstances are unchangeable I am in reality claiming that I have the same unchanging power as God. That’s a lie! God is the only unchangeable one! You and I are capable of change.
You and I were made limited by design. We were never meant to be God, but at the root of every sin is a desire to possess attributes that belong only to God. When we embrace our limitations we begin to glorify God’s limitless power. There is freedom in that!
This book would be great for personal study and reflection while it can also be used for small group studies. At the end of each chapter is a list of scriptures you and use for further study or for memorization. Along with the scriptures Jen has a few personal reflection questions at the end of each chapter then concludes each chapter with a prayer.
If you are a new believer and wanting to know more about the attributes of God I highly encourage you to read this book! If you are a seasoned believer who feels like they have a pretty good grasp on understanding the attributes of God, I highly recommend you to read this book!
