The Loose Ends: Dealing with the goals and dreams that have yet to come

As the new year began I was making plans for 2017. I was thinking about the insight and wisdom I had gained from 2016, when I realized, “I wasn’t done with 2016!” I made plans for 2016 that I realized had never happened…I didn’t even get close to starting them! Even worse some of those goals were carried over from 2015….(sigh)

Can you relate? Do you have some goals, dreams or visions that are loose ends, they are still dangling out there in space that are reminders of the things you haven’t quite got around to doing or seeing happen?

I am just tempted to start calling those loose ends…fringes! Because maybe they wouldn’t bother me so much if I just changed my perspective about them. What’s even funnier, is that I think I have just turned my face to where the loose ends are in my peripheral vision — that way they are not too distracting.

But this week, the loose ends were bothering me. I finally turned my attention to them and asked God, “What about these goals and dreams? They were dreams and goals I believe you placed in me…what about them? When do we tie those up, because frankly, they are bothering me.”

Have you come to that point where those loose ends just can’t be viewed as fringes any longer? You can’t avoid them and shove them off to the wayside but you have to deal with them…take heart. I want to share with you what God shared with me.

Psalm 16:5 in The Passion Translation says:

Lord, I have chosen you alone as my inheritance. You are my prize, my pleasure, and my portion. I leave my destiny and it’s timing in your hands.

I know we talk about God’s timing all of time, and how perfect it is, but sometimes his timing is just hard to be okay with. Do you agree?

But I believe that during those times, the part that we have to hold on to is that, although we may not understand his timing, he is doing something. We may not be able to see it or comprehend it, but something is happening. He is setting things into motion, laying foundational work, so that when it is the right time, those goals and dreams become a reality that last.

God’s timing is not only perfect, but friend, you need to know that his timing is not late, and he doesn’t forget. God is not absent minded, he is mindful of all of your ways, and all the plans he has for you. All of his ways are good. The timing he has in mind…is perfect.

You have heard it said, “that timing is everything” that may be so, but that saying also puts all the pressure on us to get the timing right. That’s scary. I realize that if I relied on my timing decisions, I would have a lot of wrecks in my life.

How about instead of “timing is everything” we just say “I’m trusting God’s timing.”

I want to leave you with this…

‘For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will speed Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. And I will be found by you,’ declare the Lord. Jeremiah 29:11-14

What has helped you to trust in God’s timing? Do you have any words of insight or wisdom that you can share about your time of waiting?
