You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. John 15:3 NASB
This past weekend I was reading through John chapter 15. I have read this passage numerous times yet this time the Holy Spirit brought verse three to my attention. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Immediately after reading John 15:3 this verse, Ephesians 5:26-27 came to mind, …that He might sanctity her having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle…that she would be holy and blameless.
You may ask, “What is so significant about John 15:3 and Ephesians 5:26-27?” This one point -that the spoken word of Jesus is filled with power. Specifically in these two verses, the power to cleanse us and make us holy without spot or wrinkle.
Before becoming a christian I had lived a sexually immoral life that I believed I could be saved from but not cleansed from. I let the words of shame tell me that being spotless and clean was just an illusion and only for those who were good. There is power in the words we listen to. They can either drag you down and keep you down or they can bring hope, courage, freedom and restoration.
God spoke time into existence. He then spoke the world into existence. After that He spoke man into existence. God created everything with the words that came from His mouth. Furthermore, Jesus is also described as the Word -the one who speaks the exact utterances of God. Jesus speaks whatever he hears his Father telling him. The bottom line is -that God speaks into existence the things that are not.
For me God spoke purity into existence in my life. Purity didn’t exist in my self perception until Jesus spoke it into being in my life. He washed the words of shame, that told me I would never be pure, out of my life and in turn spoke purity into my life. Jesus was able to speak those healing words to me because I finally opened my heart to start listening to the truth He was telling me.
What are the words you are listening to? Are they words of shame and discouragement or words of hope and encouragement. I wonder what are the things that you need spoken into existence in your life today? For those who have been sexually immoral and feel unworthy, do you need to hear that in Christ you are made pure? For those who struggle with being in bondage to an addiction, do you need to hear that Christ came to set the captive free and through Him you can be free. Maybe you need to hear words of hope instead of despair. Or perhaps you need to hear that God will breath life into the dead places of your marriage.
I don’t know what words you need to hear today, but I promise you God knows what words you need to hear. Spend some time today in His presence, reading His word and listen to what He wants to tell you. Let Him speak into existence the things that are not in your own life.
To be continued…
