Hi there! I have had the privilege of reading Heather Davis Nelson’s new book called Unashamed: Healing Our Brokenness And Finding Freedom From Shame graciously provided by FlyBy Promotions in exchange for my honest review.
Heather Davis Nelson is a writer, counselor, and speaker with a MA degree from Westminster Theological Seminary. Heather has been a featured writer at the Gospel Coalition as well as a contributing author to the Journal of Biblical Counseling.
I have read other books on the topic of shame for example Dr. Brene Brown’s book Daring Greatly and her audio book Men, Women & Worthiness which are all great resources to discovering shame and it’s effects in your own life. Although, Heather Nelson uses some of Dr. Brown’s research, Unashamed is different in that Heather uses a biblical approach to combatting shame. She shines the life-giving light of the gospel on the things that leave us feeling worthless and rejected, directing our attention to the God who promises to forgive and restore us—no matter what.
I enjoyed how Heather candidly shares here own fight against shame while focusing to help her reader find freedom from shame as well. In her book she discusses how to live shamelessly through Christ-Formed community, body shame, social shame, performance shame, shame in marriage, shame-free parenting and shame in the church. These are all weighty areas of shame that stir up feelings of lack, unworthiness, fear, anger and judgement, but Heather opens the door to facing these issues with wisdom, experience and God’s word.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is tired of battling shame and ready to live freely from it’s effects. I am aware that Christine Cain released a book a few months ago also named Unashamed, don’t let that keep you from reading Heather’s book. The way I see it is freedom from shame is a great need of the church, so read both of the books!
